First of all, we’d like to apologize for the low number of posts today (we’ve been doing some back-end development work that’s been causing delays). Nonetheless, it’s now time for some of the random findings from around the internet.

Tesla’s former co-founder working on mobile chargers for the Tesla Roadster

Martin Eberhard, co-founder of Tesla Motors, is now one of the aftermarket entrepreneurs of Tesla electric-cars. When Eberhard left Tesla in January of 2008, he said that he planned to start another company entirely in the green tech field.

Eberhard now writes over at his blog at http://www.teslafounders.com. In a recent entry, Eberhard said that he is busy building mobile chargers for the Tesla Roadster.

“I originally intended to build one for myself,” Eberhard wrote. “Then for a few friends. Now I am swamped with requests from Roadster owners who want a more flexible mobile charging solution. I plan to write a blog about my little charger one of these days. But then there is my ‘real’ job that already takes 110 percent of my time!”

We’re excited to see what Eberhard comes up with.

BMW Z8 doing great on the used car market

The UK fellows at Mirror Motoring made an interesting analysis of the current used car market in the United Kingdom. Despite the monthly decline in overall sales, the used cars have actually been appreciating with more and more luxury cars being in great demand: BMW 5 Series, Jaguar XF, Audi A4, Lexus GS and even the large Range Rover models.

Moving up the luxury scale a few notches, even the ultimate luxurious vehicles as the Bentley GT, Aston Martin or Lamborghini are seeing an increased demand. This brings us to the title of this article, the limited-edition BMW super-roadster Z8 is still valued quite high, priced between £60k-£70k. UK BMW dealer believes that the Z8 could actually reach the £100k mark.

As a comparison, in California, a 2002 BMW Z8 is listed on eBay with a Buy Now Price of $98,000.

bmw-z8-gates-1280x960

According to Adrian Rushmore, editor of trade price oracle Glass’s Guide, the average price of a three-year-old car is actually higher in 2009 than it was in 2007. We mentioned this briefly in the past that the reduced number of vehicles built in the second half of 2008 might actually improve our odds to sell the cars we own at a higher price.

Now remember, this analysis was made on the UK auto market and might not entirely apply to rest of the world, but nonetheless it is still quite interesting to see how the used car market is reacting to the economy and what the future might bring.

2009 LA Concours d'Elegance kicks off West Coast show season

2009 L.A. Concours d'Elegance - Now that it's almost officially summer, that means one thing: car shows. While those on the East Coast were treated to two days of fine automobiles at the Greenwich Concours this past weekend (photos from which are forthcoming), those of us on the West Coast headed over to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena for the fourth annual LA Concours d'Elegance.
As in past years, there was something for every type of car nut, with classes ranging from Horseless Carriages to Supercars and everything in between. A muscle car fan? There were plenty to enjoy including a black-on-black AAR Cuda, and a genuine Superbird. Like Italian sports cars? There were several Ferrari classes plus a Lamborghini class with two beautiful Miuras and a pristine '89 Countach 25th Anniversary. Are classic British roadsters your thing? Morgans, Austin Healeys, MGs, Jaguars, and Triumphs all graced the lawn. And of course there were European Classics like this 1938 Delahaye Type 135 MS and 1939 Bugatti type 57C, plus a class dedicated to the 300SL Gullwing, Shelby Cobras, Aston Martins, Hot Rods, and more.

Lamborghini adding solar power to factory, vows to cut range CO2 35% by 2015

In the grand scheme of things, the facilities and products of Lamborghini don't really amount to a hill of beans. After all, the company only has one main factory that produces a few thousand cars a year. While those cars are high-powered and consume a lot of fuel per mile driven, Lamborghini owners tend to drive those cars far fewer miles than the mainstream autos the rest of us hop into on a daily basis. As such, the Lambos' total emissions don't add up to much.
Nonetheless, Lamborghini is still somewhat sensitive to both social and regulatory concerns and has an ambitious plan to reduce CO2 emissions. The automaker is in the process of installing a 17,000 square meter solar array to its factory roof that, when completed later this year, will generate 1,582 MWh of electricity annually. In addition to that, changes are being made inside the plant to improve insulation, lighting, and climate control as part of a broader effort to lower factory-related CO2 emissions 30 percent by 2010.
As for the products coming out of the factory, Lamborghini is pursuing several paths towards a goal of 35-percent CO2 reduction by 2015. In addition to expanding the use of technology like the direct injection that debuted on the Gallardo LP560-4 last year, the engineers are working on improved combustion, weight reduction, auto start/stop systems, hybrid drive and biofuel use.

Ferrari CEO confirms hybrid concept car, may come to LA in Dec.

We’ve been hearing about Ferrari going green for some time now. Last month, it was reported that Ferrari filed for a patent application for a four-wheel-drive hybrid system. It is said that the system could be fitted to Ferrari’s future front and rear-engine models.

Ferrari CEO Amedeo Felisa today confirmed that the Italian automaker is working on a hybrid concept car in order to study how it can better meet stringent 2014 European emissions regulations.

Felisa said that Ferrari continues to study turbocharging, but insisted that the engines would “still have that high-revving Ferrari feeling.” He said that biofuel is also being explored by the engineers in Maranello.

So when will we see this new Ferrari hybrid concept?

“Not at Frankfurt,” Felisa said, “but shortly thereafter, probably at an American show.” Meaning we can probably cross our fingers for the 2009 LA Auto Show in December.

Tesla Motors to open seven stores this summer

Tesla announced yesterday that it will open a total of seven regional sales and service centers this summer. In the United States, Tesla plans on opening a store in New York, Seattle and Chicago in June. Following those three stores Tesla will open up shop in Miami.

Later this month, Tesla will open a store in London, followed by Munich and Monaco.

“Tesla takes its showroom cues from Apple, Starbucks and other customer-focused retailers,” Tesla said in a statement. “Tesla stores provide a welcoming spot to surf the Web, test drive cars and learn more about Tesla, the only production automaker selling highway-capable EVs in North America or Europe.”

“We are rethinking almost every aspect of the automobile - from the powertrain to the customer experience, both online and in our stores,” said Tesla CEO and Product Architect Elon Musk.

Earlier this week, Tesla announced that it delivered its 500th Roadster in the United States. The California-based automaker will begin producing the $128,500 Roadster Sport later this month.

It has also received over 1,000 reservations for the Model S sedan.

Congressional letter alleges Nardelli and Chrysler failed to disclose more lucrative offer for Viper

In a letter from California Congressman Darrell Issa to Chrysler's Bob Nardelli, the Auburn Hills executive is charged with failing to disclose information regarding the sale of the Dodge Viper line.
According to the letter obtained by Autoblog from a source close to the situation, the Republican congressman cites Nardelli's explanation as part of the automaker's bankruptcy proceeding that there was "a lack of 'purchaser interest in response to the offering of Chrysler's Connor Avenue Viper manufacturing plant for $10 million." And yet, the letter states, "The Committee has conducted interviews and reviewed materials that clearly show there was in fact one purchaser willing to pay $35 million to purchase the Viper line."
The communication indicates that discussions were held as early as February between Chrysler's emissaries and Joseph Moch Sr. and Joseph Moch Jr. to buy all of the company's Viper-related assets. Further, an oral agreement was reportedly reached in April, with an acquisition agreement drafted later that month for $35 million - substantially more than the $10 million Chrysler was reportedly seeking for the Connor Avenue plant.
Despite the offer from Moch and apparent interest from other companies, the letter notes that Chrysler only reported a single bid for its Viper business to the bankruptcy court's Judge Arthur Gonzalez - the much smaller $5.5 million offer from Devon Motor Works reported last week. In the letter, Congressman Issa warns Nardelli:

"Failure to make this disclosure may have been illegal if you knowingly made false statements in response to questions under oath."

Perhaps the central question is: Why would Nardelli and Co. fail to disclose the Moch offer? Issa's letter offers a theory:

As you know, the Fiat group includes Ferrari, a Viper competitor in the sports car market. If it is the case that Fiat used its "hard-fought" superior bargaining position to establish as a condition of the merger a requirement that Chrysler allow the Viper brand to disappear in order to reduce competition for Ferrari, this too must be presented to the court.

Issa goes on to urge Nardelli to "disclose all legiimate offers for Viper to the court at the hearing," (which is slated to occur today, June 5) as well as "all records and communications between Chrysler and its agents with Joseph Moch Sr., Joseph Moch Jr., and their legal representatives."
So... did Nardelli and Chrysler really fail to disclose more lucrative offers for the Viper - possibly because of pressure from new parent Fiat? Stay tuned.

Chrysler reported to be hiding bid for Viper, Fiat said to be threatened by Viper as Ferrari rival

Last month when Chrysler listed most of its $2 billion assets in bankruptcy court, the Auburn Hills automaker said that it didn’t have any firm offers for its Viper brand, which was put up for sale last August. The only offer that Chrysler listed was a $5.5 billion bid by Devon Motors Works.

Now there is a new twist to the Viper story. A California congressman asked former CEO Bob Nardelli to disclose information on a $35 million bid for Viper. He said that the offer hand been hidden from Chrysler’s bankruptcy filing.

In a letter to Bob Nardelli, Rep. Darrell Issa, Calif. said that the lack of disclosure about the information on the bid suggests that Chrysler’s bankruptcy was mishandled. He said that Chrysler must provide proof that Fiat SpA was not trying to get rid of Viper altogether in order to eliminate a rival to its Ferrari unit.

Issa said that a group of investors had been exploring to buy Chrysler’s Viper business in March and April. He said that the group had spoken to Louisiana officials and that the office has a record of a sales agreement that was never signed.

“If it is the case that Fiat used its ‘hard-fought’ superior bargaining position to establish as a condition of the merger a requirement that Chrysler allow the Viper brand to disappear in order to reduce competition for Ferrari, this too must be presented to the court, said Issa.”

All we can say is - Sergio Marchionne may have been threatened with the Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR’s 7:22.1 Nurburgring lap.

Favre GTO: Good Enough to Die For?

<i>But does it TASTE like the real thing?</i>

But does it TASTE like the real thing?

Wired’s Autopia brings us the rivetingly interesting tale of one William Favre and his mission to build a Ferrari 250 GTO replica so authentic it was nearly indistinguishable from the real thing. At the peak of the Ferrari craze of the 1980s, where you could slap a prancing horse on a Cadillac Cimaron and it would sell for triple its worth, this ballsy guy was sticking it right to the Ferrari aficionado community by shamelessly copying the design of the most desirable Maranello creation ever. He wasn’t passing them off as real Ferraris, but it didn’t sit well with some folks. And quite possibly, he was murdered over it …

<i>Real or fake? (Real)</i>

Real or fake? (Real)

The handmade body, crafted out of aluminum, covers up real Ferrari mechanicals, that have all been modified to be as close as possible to the original car. Of course, that means a Columbo V12 up front, and the Borrani wire wheels, as well as an accurate interior. Favre made a few - was it just 2, or as many as 11? The numbers don’t really matter - what matters is, Favre had made all the wrong people angry. What happened next is difficult to say. All we know is that Mr. Favre ended up dead due to an encounter with the business end of a .357 Magnum. Some say suicide, some say murder. It adds up to a mystery that we’ll leave to the Poirot fans.

In any event, this one’s available at The Classic Car Collection in Switzerland, for sale, price “upon demand.” How mysterious.

bmw-m3-c-11

Last month, we gave some great exposure to the guys at MWDesign, by posting a photo of their latest project: “Darth Maul” BMW M3.

The general consensus was that their modded M3 was quite tasteful, not overly done and still keeping the M3 core design. Since many of you might wonder what mods have been used in the “Darth Maul” M3 project, the fellows at MWDesign provided us with the following list:

  • Amuse Ericsson Front Bumper with custom Orange highlights
  • Amuse Ericsson Trunk
  • CF Rear Diffuser with custom Orange highlights
  • CF Side Vents with custom Orange highlights
  • CF Side Mirrors
  • Modulare M6 20×9 F 20×10.5 R - Matte Black Centers/Gloss Black Lips + Custom Matte Black Center Caps with Orange Accents
  • Falken tires FK452 245/30/20 F 285/25/20 R
  • H&R Sports Springs

The previous photos we posted made their way all over the web, but we can’t decide yet if it was because of the gorgeous girls posing or the car.

Regardless, new photos were released today and yes, the girl is still in them.

Hartge new Aerodynamic kit for the BMW X6

The BMW tuner Hartge continues to surprise us by releasing a new aerodynamic kit for the BMW X6 Sports Activity Vehicle. Back in April, they released their original X6 kit and we weren’t overly impressed.

But the latest Hartge kit takes after the recently revealed X6 M, giving their X6 a far more aggressive stance which will turn heads.

The aero kits includes plenty of aerodynamic pieces, starting with the aggressive front bumper, a custom rear skirt and continuing with side sills, new rear difuser and stainless tailpipes.

After seeing these photos, we’re definitely giving thumbs up to the new Hartge BMW X6, as long as the price is not higher than an X6 M.

White BMW 5 Series GT spotted

After the official revealing, the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is out in the open and cruising down the Munich streets. While the official marketing photos were all about the gold and blueish colors, the test car spotted by Carscoop is sporting the beautiful Alpine White paint.

We never thought we would say this, but the 5 Series GT looks better on public roads that in those marketing photos. The car definitely has an impressive stance, road presence and it absolutely stands out. Of course, some of us are just not cut for this car and it will be difficult to accept it, but it definitely has its place in the BMW line-up and we are willing to bet that it will do just fine.

Now what else is new with the GT? Well, beside the fact that it has a brand new engine, the N55, a twin-scroller turbocharger which features for the first time High Precision Injection and variable VALVETRONIC.

bmw-5-series-gt_1

In the U.S., the first model launched will be the 550i GT and a few months behind it, an xDrive version will be offered as well. The 550i Gran Turismo will launch in the fourth quarter of this year as a 2010 model. The base price is expected to be between $65,000-$70,000.

The 5 Series Gran Turismo is also the first four-door/sedan BMW to have frameless doors, a feature available at this point only on the Coupe and Convertible models. The famous Hofmeister Kink gets a new form and it appears in “6-window” (3 windows per side) form in the rear quarter windows aft of the rear doors.

gt-5-series-_3-copy

Inside, BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo supports variable seating accommodations where the 4-seater configuration can turned into a 5-passenger cabin. The entire instrument cluster is “in a high-resolution Black Panel display, in which four classic circular instruments are most prominent; other driving-relevant displays and readouts.

Many new other things developed recently by BMW made their way into the 5 GT, technologies like the Integrated Chassis Management and FlexRay. Other electronic equipment available on the new 7 Series, will also be found in the 5 Gran Turismo.

In conclusion, judging by the photos above, the GT might actually grow on us, but we will tell you more in about a month or so, after we will see it live.

What could have been the BMW M7 or 7 Series GT

Let me start first by explaining the ambiguous, double meaning title. First of all, in the past few years, there have been several reports pointing to an imminent BMW model: the M7. Even though BMW has never official spoken of this upscale Motorsport luxury sedan, fans across the world were hoping to see on in the future.

Even more recently, when a photo of a BMW 7 Series sporting a future M Sport Package appeared on the internet, many BMW fans and auto journalists jumped to the false conclusion that we are looking at the all-mighty M7. Unfortunately, that’s not the case.

Second, I will share a little secret with you. BMW indeed had some plans of building a more luxurious, sporty 7 Series, but the final product would have carried the Gran Turismo badge, a vehicle derived from the canceled CS Concept, a vehicle highly regretted by all of us.

bmw-m7 rendering

The 7 Series GT would have been BMW’s flagship, the ONE model that many of the pessimistic BMW fans would have embraced it without a doubt. Unfortunately…again, BMW scrapped out that project in favor of a future 6 Series GT, a “progression” of a sports coupe vehicle which will be the first BMW coupe with a hatchback and four doors.

When Rendy Alfonso from Modtor contacted me to share with us his own interpretation of the BMW M7, I figured you might be interested in seeing it. While the overall size and shape of the car is the one of a 7 Series, the front-end reminds me of the CS mixed in with the Z4, so that’s when I decided to add the 7 Series GT portion to this article’s title. The idea was mostly to talk a bit about the “never born” 7 GT.

Overall, not a bad rendering, even though the front-end is almost identical with the new BMW Z4, wait…..it really is the same. But hey, let’s let Rendy share with us and see what you think.

P.S In my personal opinion, the front-end of the new 7 is perfect the way it is and the high-end performance model which will be added later this year, it really is beautiful.

Tesla delivers 500th roadster to NJ philanthropist

Tesla Motors announced today that a New Jersey (our home-base) philanthropist has taken delivery of the 500th Tesla Roadster. Martin Tuchman, former chairman and CEO of Interpool, plans on charging his Roadster partly with solar energy with photovoltaic panels he helped install throughout his hometown of Kingston, NJ.

“My Roadster drives like a dream — it’s amazing,” said Tuchman. He plans to use his twilight blue Roadster as his primary commuter car.

Tuchman will be taking advantage of the HOV commuter lanes on the NJ Turnpike while he enjoys a $7,500 federal tax credit.  Zero-emission vehicles are exempt from New Jersey sales, use and luxury taxes as well.

Press Release:

Tesla Motors Delivers 500th Roadster

NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–A New Jersey philanthropist was the 500th person to take ownership of a Tesla Roadster, an important milestone for the world’s leading electric vehicle manufacturer.

Martin Tuchman, former chairman and CEO of Interpool, is chairman of The Tuchman Foundation and a board member of The Parkinson’s Alliance and Parkinson’s Disease Foundation of Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York. He plans to charge his Roadster partly with solar energy thanks to photovoltaic panels he helped install throughout his hometown of Kingston, NJ.

“My Roadster drives like a dream — it’s amazing,” said Tuchman, a former automotive engineer and owner of a 1967 Mercedes 250 and a 1993 Jaguar convertible. Tuchman converted his 1937 Chris-Craft into an electric boat so he could take it on nearby Lake Carnegie, which prohibits gas-powered boats. He plans to use his Roadster as his primary commuter car.

Tuchman took delivery of a Twilight Blue Roadster last weekend, a few weeks before the anticipated opening of a Tesla showroom in New York’s Chelsea Art District. Greater New York is Tesla’s largest market outside of California, and local EV owners enjoy numerous incentives.

Zero-emission vehicles are exempt from New Jersey sales, use and luxury taxes. Single occupants of alternative-fuel vehicles may also use the high-occupancy commuter lanes on the New Jersey Turnpike. These incentives are on top of a $7,500 US federal tax credit, which fully applies to all Tesla Roadsters.

Tesla will also soon be opening stores in Chicago, London, Seattle, Miami, Washington, Monaco and Munich. Tesla will begin deliveries in Europe this summer.

San Carlos, Calif.-based Tesla is the only production automaker selling highway-capable EVs in the United States or Europe. The Roadster beats nearly every other car for acceleration yet is twice as energy efficient as a Toyota Prius. It costs roughly $4 to refuel and can be completely recharged in as little as 3.5 hours.

Michael van der Sande, Tesla Senior Vice President of Global Sales, Service and Marketing, called the 500th delivery an important symbol for the world’s newest production automaker.

“We now have more than 500 real-world customers providing valuable feedback on our cars and contributing to Tesla’s spirit of continuous improvement,” van der Sande said. “We intend to leverage our first-mover advantage and continue to build brand loyalty for years - from our 500th to our 500,000th delivery.”

Gemballa Mirage GT Carbon Edition: More details and images released

Earlier this year, Gemballa released a couple of images and some details on its yet-to-be-completed Mirage GT Carbon Edition. While we’re already impressed with Porsche Carrera GT based Mirage GT - more power, lighter body weight and better performance is never a bad thing.

Power comes from Porsche’s V10 that has been modified to produce 670-hp with a maximum torque of 465 lb-ft. 0 to 62 mph has been brought down to 3.7 seconds compared to the stock 3.9 seconds. 0 to 124 mph comes in just 9.7 seconds while top speed comes in at 208 mph.

Gemballa will only make 5 units of the Mirage GT Carbon Edition with prices starting at 298,000 euros ($420,725 USD).

Press Release:

The ultimate super sports car - GEMBALLA MIRAGE GT Carbon Edition

For more than 25 years, the automobile manufacturer GEMBALLA Automobiltechnik GmbH & Co. KG builds exclusive sports cars which are based on the Porsche model range. Thereby, the company under the management of the founder Uwe Gemballa always sets standards regarding engine performance, innovative automobile design and exclusive interior. This is impressively confirmed by numerous lap records on the most difficult race track of the world, the Nürburgring Nordschleife. And also by winning many awards such as the renowned “red dot design award”. And last but not least by thrilled customers all over the world.

And also the latest super sports car - the GEMBALLA MIRAGE GT Carbon Edition - limited to only 5 pieces will conquer the motor sports hearts of its future owners in supersonic speed. Based on the Porsche Carrera GT the specialists from Leonberg near Stuttgart present an extremely attractive version of the MIRAGE GT. The eye-catching main evolutionary characteristic is the GEMBALLA body element production in carbon fibre. But that is not all: ultra-light aerodynamics components which have been optimised in the wind tunnel and a power engine with powerful 670 hp top performance render an impressive top speed of 335 km/h. A ground-breaking, hydraulic, height-adjustable coilover kit is especially adjusted to the GEMBALLA wheel-tyre combination GT SPORT Forged and this interplay provides perfect road handling. And also the interior is upgraded from the floor room to the roof lining. Perfectly processed and stylishly arranged leather and carbon turn every Mirage GT cockpit into an exclusive unique masterpiece.

Carbon - as far as the eye can see

Already the serial version of the Carrera GT presents itself with an abundance of ultra-light and high-strength carbon material. And GEMBALLA continues this trend in the MIRAGE GT Carbon Edition by using it as the main component of all body parts. Each single element of the GEMBALLA aerodynamics design is optimised in the wind tunnel, produced in perfect surface quality and accurately fitted into the automobile.

The core part of the newly designed MIRAGE GT front is the striking apron with the enhanced air inlets for an improved ventilation of the front coolers. In combination with the new front lip, GEMBALLA does not only achieve an aggressive look, but also generates additional downthrust. Also the front wings and the bonnet are replaced by proprietary development components. At the flanks, you find newly designed side skirts.

These calm down the air duct between the axles and send additional cooling air to the brake system through integrated passages. The new diffuser which is fitted into the new rear skirt stabilises the rear section at high speeds and in connection with the enlarged rear wing, it generates contact pressure at the rear axle. Further advancements are provided by the individually adjustable Gurney flap which is inserted in the wing profile. The body kit is perfected with the GEMBALLA roof channel as well as the air scoop of the engine compartment and the rear view camera casing.

3.7 seconds from zero to hundred km/h - accompanied by an incomparable exhaust sound

But the GEMBALLA MIRAGE GT Carbon Edition does not only impress with its fascinating design. As a result of an optimised engine management and a special exhaust system with sport catalysts and pneumatic valve control, not only the engine performance and the acceleration improve significantly. Due to its 670 hp / 493 kW at 8,000 rpm and 630 Newton metres at 5,700 rpm, the ten-cylinder accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in breath-taking 3.7 seconds. The top speed is 335 km/h and therefore also faster than the basic model. For an enhanced gas pedal response, the GEMBALLA technicians fit a sports clutch with special pads. Especially when driving stop and go in city traffic, this is an enormous advantage and allows a smooth and bucking-free take-off.

Innovative running gear technology for the race track and for everyday use

The running gear components in the MIRAGE are especially adjusted to the enhanced engine performance and sporty driving manner. They consist of four individually adjustable coilover dampers in a unit with progressively coiled double springs. For everyday use, the electro-hydraulic height-adjustment is extremely innovative and enormously helpful. By pushing a button in the passenger compartment, it is possible to lift the body by 45 millimetres at the front- and rear axle and therefore allows driving over obstacles such as underground car park entrances and traffic ramps. Also by pushing a button or by reaching 80 km/h, the MIRAGE lowers itself to its original level. As the perfect wheel-tyre combination, GEMBALLA gits the multi-part rims GT SPORT Forged in the dimension 9.5 x 19 and 12.5 x 20 with tyres in the serial measurement 265/35 ZR19 at the front axle and 335/30 ZR20 at the rear axle.

Exclusive interior design without limits

GEMBALLA presents the perfect symbiosis between sportive functionality and luxurious ambience. The interior designers combine the most precious materials such as fine leather, ultra-suede and carbon fibre in a very stylish way. The leather which is processed with expert hand is very resilient and yet extremely soft. The characteristic natural product with its individual grain and the masterly decorative stitching render an extravagant look around the newly designed centre console. The latter is entirely made of carbon fibre and contains the GEMBALLA Multimedia unit and the Data Control System.

The harmonically integrated display presents driving data such as acceleration, cross-acceleration and deceleration values. Another highlight in the GEMBALLA MIRAGE GT Carbon Edition is the full-size airbag sports steering wheel with a diameter of 340 millimetres.

GEMBALLA - the specialist for high end Porsche refinements and innovative engineering design offers the entire refining set for the GEMBALLA MIRAGE GT Carbon Edition which is only limited to 5 specimen from 298,000 euros (net price, without basic automobile).

Word on the street is that Jaguar is working on the car every Jaguar fan is dying to see - a rival to the Porsche Boxster. According to AutoExpress, Jaguar is hard at work on a compact two-seat roadster, which will be a successor to the Jaguar C-Type.

Insiders say that Jaguar is looking to compete in a market mainly dominated by the Porsche Boxster, Audi TT, BMW Z4 and the Mercedes-Benz SLK.

Taking styling cues from the XF and driving dynamics from the XK, the new addition to Jaguar’s lineup will feature rear-wheel-drive, stunning design, a fabric roof and an impressive engine lineup.

The entry level model will feature a 3.0L V6 making 235-hp while the range-topper will feature a 5.0L V8 making 380-hp. Sources say that the European market will also get a 3.0L twin-turbo diesel making 272-hp.

You can look out for the new Jaguar roadster in 2012 at the earliest.

AutoCar interviews Ulrich Bez about the Aston Martin One-77

Dr. Ulrich Bez has the job every auto enthusiast can only dream of - being CEO of Aston Martin. Bez, 66, received his doctorate in engineering from the University of Stuttgart, but had to create a resume with other impressive credentials than that to become the boss of Aston.

He has previously held positions at Porsche, BMW and Daewoo Motors where he’s been responsible for product design and development. Even standing next to Bez is a privilege in itself (and we say that only because he’s the main man behind the idea of the Aston Martin One-77).

The folks over at AutoCar recently had the lucky opportunity to interview Bez about the new Aston Martin One-77 and even had him fire it up for the cameras. Of course, AutoCar did what every other auto journalist would do after hearing the sound coming from the 700-hp One-77 - they asked Bez if they could drive it. Did Bez say yes or no? Find out in the video posted after the jump.

Tesla delivers 500th Roadster to New Jersey man

From the first to the 100th and now to the 500th, the story of Tesla Motors and their first offering, the Roadster, has been pretty heavily documented. The trend is unlikely to stop any time soon and, in that vein, Tesla is making sure to note its latest milestone, the delivery of the 500th Roadster.
The lucky recipient is New Jersey's Martin Tuchman, who Tesla describes as chairman of The Tuchman Foundation and a board member of The Parkinson's Alliance and Parkinson's Disease Foundation of Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York. Tuchman is apparently a car fan, with a 1967 Mercedes 250 and a 1993 Jaguar convertible in his stable. Those cars will get even less of a workout now that the Roadster is around, as it is scheduled to become Tuchman's main commuter car. Interestingly, Tuchman will reportedly use solar power to charge his new toy whenever possible, which ought to make for a clean getaway.

The Future of Hyundai Sports Cars - Car News

Over the past few years, Hyundai has marched upward with the all the drive, ambition, and brashness of Eva Peron. Since 2007, we have seen Hyundai augment its line of plebeian automobiles with the upscale Veracruz crossover, the impressive Genesis sedan, and the surprisingly talented Genesis Coupe.

As part of its second so-called “24/7” plan, during which Hyundai will launch seven new vehicles in 24 months, the company will revamp its line of core products. (The first 24/7 plan started in 2005 and ended in 2007.) Most interesting to us among those products is a compact sporty coupe based on the Accent platform and styled much in the vein of the well-received Veloster concept car that debuted in Frankfurt in 2007.

In a recent interview withCar and Driver, Hyundai product PR chief Miles Johnson confirmed that the little Honda CRX-like 2+2 is on track for launch sometime during the 24/7 2.0 program, which technically started with the introduction of the Genesis Coupe and continues late this year with the next-generation Tucson crossover. We imagine that it would be offered in the States with a range of four-pot engines ranging from 1.6 to 2.0 liters, possibly including the high-output (i.e. turbocharged) version of the 2.0-liter seen in the 210-hp Genesis Coupe 2.0T.

Gaplin Auto Sports brings U.S. Air Force technology to the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger

Galpin Auto Sports (or GAS) is an automobile repair shop in Van Nuys, California. GAS is better known for its TV show on USA otherwise known as Pimp My Ride on MTV. The group responsible for KITT in the 2008 Knight Rider series (and for embedding in 7-inch TV screens into bumpers on MTV’s Pimp My Ride), has now teamed up with the United States Air Force to create two customized cars for the 2009 Super Car Tour.We have to say; both vehicles have blown us away - literally.

The first vehicle, known as the ‘X-1,’ is based on a Ford Mustang. It has been painted in matte-pearlescent and features a single-driver ejections seat in the center. It also features a short shift flight stick, an advanced instrument panel that will confuse the heck out of you, a motorizes steering wheel, a GPS transponder, and a touch screen monitor that displays night and thermal vision. Power comes from a 4.6L V8, which features 3-valve Ford Racing heads, a cold air intake, hot rod cams and long tube headers. All that gives the X-1 the ability to throttle 500-hp.

Click through for more info and the high-res image galleries.

Next up is the stealth-black Air Force ‘Vapor’ based on the Dodge Challenger. On the outside, Vapor features one-off carbon fiber wheels, shaker hood, radar-absorbing paint, proximity sensors and a 360- degree camera with a ¼ mile range. Open the vertical doors to the Vapor and you’ll see an interior complete with aircraft style controls, a passenger side steering wheel, GPS tracking, night and thermal vision on the front windshield.

The best part? The ‘Vapor’ actually features a custom stealth exhaust mode that allows you to drive the Challenger in complete silence. If that’s not enough to get you jumping out of your seat, the Vapor also carries an advanced computer system with remote control UAV-type access from anywhere in the world using the internet. The Vapor also comes with two custom flight helmets.

Both vehicles will be used during a marketing campaign by the U.S. Air Force to educate young people on the mechanical and technical career opportunities available within the Air Force.

<i>Hmm ... $2 million ... why not?</i>

Hmm ... $2 million ... why not?

If you’ve been asking yourself, “what sort of convertible or targa-roof car can I get for this $2 million burning a hole in my wallet?” Have we got the car for you! It’ll do 224 MPH, and it probably won’t suck your face off at that velocity with the roof off. (Probably.) Bugatti’s long awaited (by the 2 people on earth who can afford it) targa is finally here, as the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport enters production in July.

<i>Looks pretty nice. Fourth mortgage time?</i>

Looks pretty nice. Fourth mortgage time?

But act now, as only 150 of the beauts will be produced … so head on over to Crazy Dan’s Auto Emporium for a low low low financing and the best deals in town, or my name ain’t Crazy Dan! (Press release from Bugatti below.)

PRESS RELEASE

Production start for the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport
Media and customers complete first test drives

Cannes, May 2009 - Last year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California was the setting for the very first public presentation of the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport. The response was extremely positive and now production of this roadster – limited to 150 units – is to begin at Molsheim. At the same time, the media and customers are taking their first test drives.

The new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport confronted the marque renowned for impeccable automotive solutions, aesthetics and driving dynamics with a whole new set of challenges. In response to customer demand, significant modifications have been made to the vehicle’s complex structure so as to enable open-top driving, thereby adding a new dimension to this high-performance sports car. Incorporating a host of new and innovative safety and equipment features, it is the world’s fastest and most exciting roadster. It is immediately recognizable as a result of its slightly higher windscreen, stylized daytime running lights, and lightweight, transparent polycarbonate roof.

The main challenge in developing the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport with its removable roof resulted from the unique structure of the fixed-roof Bugatti Veyron. An optimum combination of rigidity and lightweight engineering ensures the monocoque passenger cell of the original model is extremely strong, while weighing an absolute minimum . As the roof is an integral part of the vehicle’s structure, removing it meant the load paths had to be completely redesigned to maintain the vehicle’s rigidity and crash safety, and to offer additional protection from side impacts and rolling.

As a result, the monocoque structure has been reinforced around the side skirts and the transmission tunnel. The B-pillars have been cross-stiffened using a carbon fibre support, and a central carbon plate has been positioned beneath the transmission tunnel to ensure the vehicle suffers from less torsional flexing
than any other roadster.

The doors of the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport are made of carbon fibre, and house an integrated longitudinal beam. In the event of an accident, this transfers the load from the A to the B-pillar, thereby dissipating impact energy. Furthermore, the two redesigned air intakes for the 16-cylinder mid-engine
now feature 10-centimetre wide carbon-fibre elements to offer protection in the event of a roll.

Along with moisture-resistant, backstitched leather, a range of new equipment features has been added to the interior, including a reversing camera with 2.7-inch monitor integrated in the rear-view-mirror, and the “Puccini” sound system with digital signal processor.

When the roof is closed, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport can reach 407 km/h, while speeds of up to 360 km/h are possible with the roof off. Should it rain, an innovative soft-top roof, like an umbrella, stored in the luggage compartment, can be opened up at any time. With this soft top in place, the car can
travel at up to 160 km/h.

More than just an open Veyron

“When I had the chance to test-drive the new Grand Sport for the first time myself, I was filled with excitement”, said Pierre Henri Raphanel, Bugatti’s Pilot official, “as soon I shifted into second gear, I knew this was a completely different car. I could immediately feel the difference. Even with the roof still on, in the tips of my fingers and at the base of my spine everything was more present, more intimate. More precise with less understeer, almost as if you had taken away some filters from the suspension and the steering.” The former Le Mans winner has probably driven more kilometres in a Veyron than anyone else, presenting the car to numerous customers and the press. Taking off the roof “the excitement comes directly from the engine – giving you the feeling that you had a horsepower factory just thirty centimetres behind your head, trying to suck you up and swallow you,” he raves.

Assembled by hand at the company’s headquarters in Molsheim, Alsace, the Grand Sport will be delivered from July 2009 onwards at a price of 1.4 million euros (excluding taxes and transportation). Just 150 units will be made, with the first 50 of these going exclusively to registered Bugatti customers. So far 30 Grand
Sports have been ordered. The Chassis Number one auctioned at the Pebble Beach Auction by Gooding and Company last summer and sold for 3.19 million Dollar. The additional revenues of 900.000 Dollar were donated by Bugatti to the Pebble Beach Company Foundation Charity.

Supercar Features Air Force-Tuned Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger

Recruitment is at an all time low for the Air Force. But what to do? How do you embellish a job that involves flying multi-million dollar crater-makers for a living? Answer: You bring it down a notch, and put cockpits in muscle cars!

The USAF hired Galpin Auto Sports to transform a Mustang and a Challenger into two serious supercars in hopes of attracting gearheads to Air Force recruiting events. And boy did Galpin deliver. The “X-1″ Mustang and the “Vapor” Challenger are totally unique interpretations of two of the most widely popular tuner cars in the world.

air-force-x-1-mustang-by-galpin-auto-sports_100182372_l

The X-1 comes decked out with an ejection seat and a full instrument panel with enough gizmos to make the GT-R’s readouts seem restrained. We are curious about the joystick. I mean, we know it works on Gran Turismo but how does it work on the way to Costco? And the Vapor sports a two seat layout-a pilot and copilot sort of arrangement–complete with two steering wheels. We’re not sure we like the idea of our girlfriend’s or mom’s having potential control of the vehicle, but it would probably be ideal for Driver Training courses.

Which brings up the biggest issue: while these rides are totally sick, the Air Force isn’t any closer to getting me in a pilot’s seat than they were the last time I faked colorblindness. That is, unless I could obtain the keys to one of these sterling beauties. (Hint, hint: you hear that USAF? I can be bought!)

For those of you who have been swayed and intend on in enlisting, the Air Force would appreciate you showing your patriotism and reading the entire press release:

Galpin Auto Sports PARTNERS WITH U.S. Air Force TO CREATE

Two “SUPERCARS”

Built for the 2009 Recruiting Tour: the ‘X-1’ Ford Mustang and ‘Vapor’ Dodge Challenger Feature Hyper-Advanced Technology and Design

NORTH HILLS, Calif. (June 1, 2009) – Galpin Auto Sports collaborated with the United States Air Force to create two customized vehicles for its 2009 Super Car Tour – a new U.S. Air Force recruiting initiative that kicked off in May. The white Ford Mustang ‘X-1’ and black Dodge Challenger ‘VAPOR’ are Air Force-inspired designs that will travel across the country this year as part of a mobile marketing campaign to educate young people on the mechanical and technical career opportunities available within the Air Force.

Southern California based Galpin Auto Sports is widely known for its corporate and one-off vehicle designs, through its involvement with various movies and TV projects, including the 2008 “Knight Rider” series’ KITT car, the upcoming movie car in the thriller “The Red Mist” and the acting-home base of MTV’s “Pimp My Ride”.

“For Galpin Auto Sports to be commissioned by the most technologically advanced organization on Earth is truly an honor” said Beau Boeckmann, Chief Designer for Galpin Auto Sports. “This is one of the most extraordinary and important projects that we have ever done.”

The Air Force looked to Galpin Auto Sports to create two unique hyper-styled vehicles with the most technologically advanced features available. The vehicles are a combination of form, function and futuristic entertainment all fueled together. To see the entire build of the X-1 and Vapor, please visit: http://www.airforce.com/supercar/.

Representing the muscle of the Air Force, the ‘X-1’ Mustang is a heavenly matte-pearlescent painted supercar with a jet cockpit that includes a single-driver ejection seat in center of vehicle, short shifter, flight stick, and advanced instrumentation panel. The ‘X-1’ also has a concealed motorized steering wheel, custom foot pedals, GPS transponder and the innovative dash is equipped with a touch screen monitor and sensor pack that displays night and thermal vision. The 4.6 liter engine includes 3-valve Ford Racing heads, cold air intake, hot rod cams, and long tube headers creating 500hp and is maintained by a custom Ford Racing Tuning Program. The Vertical doors feature interior panel fabrication to complete the ‘jet-like’ feel of the ‘X-1’, which will appear on the East Coast portion of the Air Force recruiting tour.

The stealth-black Air Force Challenger ‘Vapor’ features a biometric access to open the Vertical doors, a custom Stealth body kit with Jet enhancements and a carbon fiber exterior trim. Other exterior components include one-off carbon fiber wheels, a custom stealth exhaust mode that allows the vehicle to run in complete silence or you can open up the headers to facilitate the aggressive sound of the engine, shaker hood, radar-absorbing paint, proximity sensors, and a 360-degree camera with ¼ mile range. The interior of the ‘Vapor’ is complete with aircraft style controls, a passenger side steering wheel, GPS tracking, night and thermal vision via a film on the front windshield, and the most technologically-advanced computer system with remote control UAV-type access from anywhere in the world utilizing the internet. The ‘Vapor’ also comes with two custom flight helmets in line with the Air Force theme of the vehicle.

The vehicles recently debuted in Austin, Texas under Brigadier General AJ Stewart, commander of Air Force Recruiting Service as well as 60 U.S. Air Force marketers and GSD&M Idea City. Galpin Auto Sport’s Lead Customizer, Mad Mike, was present for the unveiling and felt a personal connection to this project having started his career in the Air Force. “If it was not for the U.S. Air Force, I would not have the knowledge and skills that enables me to stand where I am today.” said Mad Mike.

“We’re looking for hands-on people to serve in critical Air Force jobs and we’re fortunate to be working with exactly those kinds of professionals at Galpin,” said Daniel Elkins, U.S. Air Force Recruiting Services. “The Super Car Tour is illustrative of the kinds of opportunities available in the Air Force where technology knows no limit.”

The 2009 Super Car Tour will primarily visit high schools and a variety of Air Force sponsored events including the DUB magazine auto show, Hot Import Nights, Battle of the Imports, Formula Drift, International Hot Rod Association and local community events.

Porsche to post operating profit, will produce more than 100,000 units next fiscal year

Claus Schmiedel, a member of parliament in Porsche’s home-state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, told the Stuttgarter Nachrichten that Porsche will sell around 80,000 units in the current fiscal year and expects to post a full-year operating profit of between 700 million euros ($979.5 million) and 800 million.

Schmiedel, who said he had spoken to Porsche’s finance chief and taken a look at the sports car maker’s books, says that Porsche is having no problem at an operating level. He said that “the company will achieve an operating margin of 12 percent.”

Schmiedel says that Porsche is looking to sell more than 100,000 cars in the next fiscal year and is aiming at more than 1 billion euros. We’re guessing the new target increase is due to the introduction of the Porsche Panamera, of which Porsche hopes to sell 20,000 units of annually.

Separately, Porsche board of management said yesterday that they still favor a merger with Volkswagen and don’t want to limit the deal to a specific time frame.

As statement release by the board said: ”We are convinced that the targeted integrated car-manufacturing group is the best industrial solution for all stakeholders involved. That is the case for the companies as well as for the respective workforce. Thus we do not want to put anybody under time pressure.”

Tesla’s next sports car will have rear-seating, all-wheel-drive

While Tesla’s new Model S sedan will be built on the company’s own platform, the Tesla Roadster shares its underpinnings with the Lotus Elise. However, now it’s time to work on the next Roadster, and like all future Teslas, the next-generation roadster will ride on a variation of the Model S platform.

While that will help Tesla cut back on cost rather than producing another platform, the move will also help make the next Roadster roomier - in fact it may not be a roadster at all. You can probably think of it as a Tesla Model S convertible.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk tells WebRidesTV that the next Tesla sports car will have 2+2 seating, a “roomier Porsche.” It will have 10 percent bigger rear seating and 50 percent more trunk space. Musk said that the next Tesla sports car will also come with all-wheel-drive. He said that there will be a base model to a GT version.

No word on when this will all happen but WebRidesTV says that 2012, 2013 isn’t a bad guess.

2009 Gemballa Avalanche GTR 650 EVO-R gets a facelift

The Avalanche name is very much connected to the success of tuning firm Gemballa Automobiltechnik GmbH & Co. KG. It was the first Avalanche in the mid 80s that set the foundation for the success of the Gemballa brand. Ever since, the name has been reserved for the Porsche 911 tuning program.

Gemballa has now unveiled the new facelifted Avalanche GTR 650 EVO-R. Besides the visual upgrades, Gemballa continue to offer its performance upgrade that takes output to 650-hp with peak torque of 701 lb-ft. That allows the 4WD Avalanche GTR 650 EVO-R to go from 0 to 62 mph in 3.4 seconds with a top speed of 206 mph.

And if that’s not enough for you, Gemballa offers further engine upgrades that taking output up to 800-hp.

Press Release:

The AVALANCHE GTR 650 EVO-R

The GEMBALLA masterpiece based on the Porsche 911 Turbo

The history of GEMBALLA Automobiltechnik GmbH & Co. KG is inseparably connected with the AVALANCHE. It was the first AVALANCHE generation in the mid 80s with its trendsetting body- and interior design which became a world-wide bestseller and laid the foundations of success for the Leonberg-based company. And ever since, this name is exclusively reserved for the masterpiece of the extensive GEMBALLA refining programme for Porsche 911 models.

With the AVALANCHE GTR 650 EVO-R the chairman and founder Uwe Gemballa follows this success story and presents the face-lifted version of the current AVALANCHE-generation. Equipped with a spectacular automobile design and an auto body which has been broadened with Thyssen steel, the super sports car sets benchmarks for production quality and design vocabulary. But that is not enough: the AVALANCHE GTR 650 EVO-R offers elaborate, supreme technology and with 650 hp it delivers an enormous top speed of 332 km/h. Driving pleasure for highest demands.

Fresh design for the super sports car

Already at first glance, the AVALANCHE explicitly underlines its ties with the supreme sports car league. Especially designed gull wing doors and the new front headlights from the Carrera GT, leave significant visual accents. The same applies for the powerful metal extensions which were specially produced in a Thyssen Group subsidiary and then directly welded to the body shell. The GEMBALLA technicians developed a custom-made bonnet and side skirts as well. The front wings are replaced by a carbon version. Following the facelift of the current Porsche 911 induction engine models, GEMBALLA gives the AVALANCHE a visual refreshment as well. A part of this modernisation is the entirely re-designed front skirt. The integrated carbon front lip conveys the air to the large cooling slits and gives the car an even more lowered look.

Also the rear section of the AVALANCHE contains a makeover: the most striking feature is the use of LED tail lamps from the current Porsche 911. Moreover, this is additionally enhanced by a new rear skirt. The integrated rear diffuser can either be selected with a varnish or in carbon fibre and offers space for the four end pipes of the sport exhaust system. Together with the carbon rear wing, it renders additional downthrust at the rear axle.

When engineering the AVALANCHE GTR 650 EVO-R also great emphasis was put on the aerodynamic efficiency. Therefore, the body components were perfectly adjusted to each other. The result: An individual design in perfect surface quality which also reduces the lifting forces.

Sensational performance due to elaborate technology

In addition to the breath-taking shape of the AVALACHE, the GEMBALLA engine department developed a powerful performance enhancement for the serial gearing. The engine makeover includes a racing crankshaft, a titanium connecting rod, forged pistons and racing turbo chargers. Camshafts and cylinder heads are mechanically fabricated in precision work. The aluminium induction pipe and a carbon air box with sports air filter provide the optimal air supply. A further makeover feature and responsible for the sporty and powerful sound of the AVALANCHE GTR 650 EVO-R is the stainless steel - high-performance exhaust system with the optimised racing headers.

After the extensive modifications, the super sports car has 650 hp / 478 kW at 6.200 rpm and 950 NM at 4.600 rpm. Thereby, the 4WD automobile accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in only 3.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 332 km/h.

And when this is not enough, the GEMBALLA-specialists offer even further engine types with performance enhancements up to 800 hp.

Wheels and running gear - the combination for best road handling and a striking appearance

The wheel/tyre combination of the AVALANCHE offers the optimal compromise between comfort and control. The multi-part and especially light aluminium wheels are delivered in size 9.0Jx20 with tyres measuring 245/30 ZR 20 for the front axle and 1.5Jx20 with 325/25 ZR 20 tyres at the rear axle.

The high-performance braking system which was especially devised for the AVALANCHE GTR 650 EVO-R can be easily recognised by its red-painted brake callipers. The optimal deceleration and perfect gas pedal response is rendered by enlarged 6-piston brake callipers in connection with discs measuring 405 millimetres at the front axle and 4-piston brake callipers with 380mm-discs at the rear axle.
Also, the running gear has been thoroughly modified. The new coilover kit was especially adjusted to these increased requirements. Four individually adjustable rebound dampers allow an individual fine tuning. Sport stabilisers and strut braces render additional torsional stiffness and therefore improve road handling.

VIP lounge with motor sports atmosphere

GEMBALLA completely re-designs the interior of the AVALANCHE and turns it into a VIP lounge with motor sports atmosphere. The serial lining is replaced by most precious leather. The GEMBALLA aluminium pedals splendidly shine in the foot well and perfectly go with the carbon fibre components of the interior set. The technical highlight is the full-size airbag sports steering wheel measuring 340 millimetres in diameter. The sports seats type POLE POSITION offer extra seating stability.

GEMBALLA - the specialist for high end refinement and innovative interior design offers the AVALANCHE GTR 650 EVO-R from 350,000 € (net, including basic automobile Porsche 997 Turbo).

Car and Driver: 2009 Porsche Boxster S vs. BMW Z4 sDrive35i, Audi TTS, Chevrolet Corvette

Shortly afterAutobild compared some of the most popular roadsters out there, the Michigan based felows at Car and Driver took this challenge a bit further. While the BMW Z4 is clearly a competitor to the Porsche Boxter S or the Audi TTS, we find intriguing the fact that the Chevrolet Corvette gets “thrown” in this comparison as well.

Are you still debating which roadster to choose? Having a difficult time comparing all the specs? How about pricing with options? Well, C&D has done a great job analyzing these beautiful roadsters, so let’s see what they had to say.

2009_audi_tts_bmw_z4_porsche_boxster_chevy_corvette_2_zoomed

The idea was to round up a group of 50-something-thousand-dollar roadsters, but like the TARP plan, we blew through that ceiling almost immediately. The most egregious example is the Boxster S, which Porsche sent loaded with almost $20,000 worth of options—including the automaker’s new $3420 PDK dual-clutch transmission—for an overindulged as-tested price of $76,625. For 2009, the Boxster S comes with a revised 3.4-liter flat-six engine and freshened front and rear styling. It’s mostly direct injection that boosts the output 15 horsepower, for a total of 310.

Our second-most-pricey car is the new BMW Z4. The 300-hp sDrive35i starts at a not unreasonable $52,475, but a Sport package (which includes an adjustable suspension), a premium stereo, and a navigation system catapulted the sticker price to $65,345.

McLaren F1 meets maker in California

It's the little things in life that make all the difference. Flames shooting out the exhaust of a supercar? Awesome. Flames billowing out of the entire engine bay? Uh-oh. So seeing a McLaren F1 - in the United States, no less - going up in smoke is a real tear-jerker.
We have to admit that with so many drivers exhibiting more flash than talent, reporting on the endless barrage of destroyed supercars got a little tiresome, if not downright depressing. The McLaren F1 made even the Ferrari Enzo seem dime-a-dozen common - 100 examples were made in all, and only a tiny fraction of those squeaked through DOT regs to make it Stateside.
Reportedly valued at $2 million, this toasted Mac was spotted on Airport Boulevard in Santa Rosa, California, its BMW V12 on fire after its owner reportedly took it for a ride after leaving it dormant for six months. If that's the case, this is proof positive that cars need to be driven, not mothballed.

Gemballa Mirage GT Carbon Edition

Gemballa doesn't strike us as a company that would be easily deterred by minor details. Things like the end of a production run, for example. So while the Porsche Carrera GT may have finished its run, that doesn't mean the German exotic tuning house is about to stop having fun.
We initially reported on the latest Gemballa Mirage GT Carbon Edition back in February, when details and images were scarce, but both have now emerged. As you'd expect from the name, the modified Carrera GT features a lot of carbon fiber trim, but unlike some other weave-clad tuner cars, the carbon on the latest Mirage isn't just for show: the aerodynamic elements aim to improve the car's performance by channeling airflow in and around the supercar's svelte shape to keep it breathing free and stuck to the tarmac.
Of course, Gemballa hasn't stopped there. Porsche's free-revving V10 has been tuned to produce 670 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque, enough to propel the rocket-sled up to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 208 mph. There's also an electro-hydraulic adjustable suspension to keep that carbon fiber lip spoiler clear of curbs and speed bumps. The package costs just shy of 300,000 euros ($425k), which doesn't include the cost of the donor car, and production will be limited to just five examples, which may keep moneyed Porschephiles satiated until the rumored roadgoing RS Spyder hits the road. Details in the press release after the jump and photos in the high-resolution image gallery below.

First free 2010 Camaro lowering kit already distributed

This is a real heart breaker. The guys and gals over at the Camaro5 forums are about as dedicated a group as you'll ever run into, and a number of the members have already picked up their hotly anticipated 2010 Chevrolet Camaros. One forum member received a rude awakening as his pride and joy 1LT Camaro was relieved of its 18-inch wheels and tires during the night. The criminals had the audacity to use the Camaro's jack, along with the jack of a Land Rover that was also relieved of its rollers, to commit this heinous crime.
Forum member Number 3 thinks he may have accidentally left the car unlocked, which is obviously a bad idea. For now, the Camaro is resting on three car jacks, and the hope is that the oil pan and exhaust were undamaged during the incident. Bummer. You can bet Number 3 will be scouring the Internet for anyone trying to hock a set of 18s on eBay Motors or Craigslist.

2010 Corvette Grand Sport to start at $55,720?

If the introduction of the ZR1 into the Corvette lineup has made the base model look a bit dull, the Grand Sport package more than fills the aesthetic gap between the models. The Grand Sport package includes Stingray-like gills aft of the front wheels, unique rims and Z06 brakes. Unique suspension tuning reportedly nets a 0-60 time that goes from 4.2 seconds on the base coupe to 4.0 seconds in its updated configuration.
Corvette Blogger is reporting what it says is official Grand Sport package pricing, and the bottom line isn't as tough to swallow as some may have envisioned. The Bowtie fanboy site lists Grand Sport pricing at $55,720 for the coupe and $59,530 for the convertible. That's a not-inconsequential $6,205 bump for the coupe and $5,360 for the droptop. The Grand Sport package essentially obviates the need for the $1,695 Z51 package, however, so you're basically looking at $3,500-$4,500 for the retuned suspension, widebody stance, Z06 brakes, improved 0-60 mph times, and aeshetic and exclusivity benefits, which doesn't strike us as a bad deal.

Dino Roso design study takes another stab at reviving Ferrari's classic 246 GT

Good or bad, everybody's got an opinion on the styling of contemporary Ferrari offerings - a fact that could go a long way toward explaining why everybody and their cousin wants to have a go at designing the Italian stallions themselves. The latest to join the fold is Paolo Roso, an apparently aspiring automotive designer. His project? The Dino Roso, a project that aims to reinterpret the classic 1967 Dino 246 GT in a radically different form.
While we have to admit we're not big fans of the front end (and we have to wonder how the driver is supposed to see around those enormous pillars - rollover protection isn't an issue in fantasy) - there are certain attractive elements to the design. If you care to see for yourself, it's on display through October in 1:10 scale model form at the "Sognando l'automobile" (Dreaming the Automobile) exhibit at the Museo dell'Automobile Bonfanti-Vimar in northern Italy. Or if your passport is out of date, you could always just click on the thumbnails below to view in our high-res gallery.

Vizualtech renders time-attack Nissan 200SX

Vizualtech Nissan 200SX time attack

The folks over at Vizualtech, the 3D rendering firm that brought you the Audi R8-inspired catamaran and a Le Mans-ready Dodge Challenger are at it again. This time, the team has put together a stunning widebody Nissan 240SX for time attack duty.
Evidently designed for an unnamed Swedish client, the turbocharged, 600-horsepower 200SX was inspired by a GT 500-class Japan GT Touring Car (although apparently they've taken a few theoretical liberties, as the GT 500 class is capped at 500 horses). That aside, we think this is a killer-looking job, one that we'd happily check out at the track.

Lamborghini Murcielago successor not coming until 2012

Lamborghini supercars tend to have a relatively long lifespan. The Countach stayed in production for sixteen years from its introduction in 1974 until the Diablo replaced it in 1990, which in turn anchored Sant'Agata's line-up for eleven years until the Murcielago was introduced in 2001. Now eight years in production, the steel-bodied Raging Bull has grown pretty long in the tooth, even if it can still hold its own against its contemporary competition.
In order to keep it fresh, the Murci has spawned a seemingly endless succession of variants, from the original through the LP640, 40th Anniversary and Versace editions, fixed roof and roadsters versions, the Reventón, LP650-4 Roadster and LP670-4 SuperVeloce. Lambo's done a good job of keeping its biggest, baddest fighting bovine with the times, but they know it's about time this aging bull be put to pasture. However if the latest reports are any indication, it may yet be a couple of years more before the Murci meets its replacement.
When it does come along, though, Auto Motor und Sport says we can expect the new flagship Lambo to ditch the Murci's outmoded steel chassis in favor of an aluminum one - likely based on the Audi R8's. Draped in aluminum and carbon fiber, the chassis will, in all likelihood, carry a revised version of the Bizzarrini-designed V12 that was the company's first engine and which has, with considerable modification, carried on in the company's supercars ever since. While the wheelbase is expected to carry over from the outgoing Murcielago, the front overhang is expected to shrink, while all-wheel-drive will continue to put the power down to the tarmac.

Next Tesla Roadster aims at 911 Turbo with AWD and usable space

Electric drivetrain aside, the Tesla Roadster isn't the most practical sports car on the market. Like its Lotus counterpart, the Roadster is lacking space for both passengers and parcel, something Tesla CEO Elon Musk is all-too-happy to admit. But as you'd expect from the plucky upstart and its confident chief executive, Tesla has big plans to expand beyond the Roadster and Model S sedan, and it's got the Porsche 911 in its sights.
Although we've known for some time that Tesla plans to base future models on the Model S platform - ranging from a base model to a full-fledged GT - the automaker's been tight-lipped about the specifics of future sports cars. However, Musk let it slip during an interview that a 911 Turbo shares a space in his garage with a Roadster, and he loves its ability to schlep the kiddies to school in its diminutive back seats. Inspired, Musk said that the next Tesla sports car would be a 2+2, boasting 10% more room for rear-seat passengers and 50% more trunk space than the 911, along with all-wheel drive. Additionally, the Model S' flat architecture means that styling won't be completely influenced by the drivetrain, allowing for "greater functionality with avant garde, aggressive" styling. Although this new coupe's future is largely dependent on the success of the Model S, if Tesla can keep the lights on and continue R&D, we might see the GT as early as 2012 or 2013.

2009 Porsche Boxster S vs. BMW Z4 sDrive35i, Audi TTS, Chevrolet Corvette

With all the doom and gloom out there—evaporating 401k plans, exploding mortgages, pay cuts, Paula Abdul—this might seem like a bad time to buy a roadster. Two seats, flashy looks, extrovert performance, and a voracious fuel appetite are bound to anger your foreclosed neighbors faster than the Senate Finance Committee can bully you into returning your annual bonus. But if you haven’t already spent your ill-advised home-equity loan, now is the time to reward yourself with an automotive indulgence. If you are someone who still has a positive net worth, you can jump-start this knocked-down economy just by spending. And we’re here to help you make the best choice.

The Ten Cars That Defined The Decade

Now that the calendar reads ‘2009′ and summer is upon us, we can already begin shutting the book on the first decade of the new millenia. All the cars that will be produced have either made it to dealerships or have half a dozen reviews already printed in some magazine collecting dust on your shelf.

This decade closes much like the 1960s, in an atmosphere of uproar and protest, with rumors of war and peace and revolution at hand. The auto industry has experienced a second Golden Age, bigger and grander than the first, and has again sunk into crisis, darker and dimmer than the one Baby Boomers remember. And enthusiasts young and old fear that a similar fate awaits them in the coming years with news of outrageously stringent CAFE standards, and fear-mongering legislators fuel anxieties that we’ve already seen the best cars of the next thirty some odd years.

So it is that we turn back to this decade already a bit nostalgic. Here lie the future legends, the autos of myth and lore. With the future unclear, we ask ourselves which cars made the glorious 2000’s the decade we will all miss more than we know?

1. FORD THUNDERBIRD

2002 Ford Thunderbird

The 11th-generation Thunderbird was resurrected from the dead for 2002. Returning to the original layout as a two-seat convertible, it wasn’t spectacularly fast, but it’s retro styling cues awakened us all from the Dark Ages of the 1980s and early 1990s, and provided the first clue that Detroit could actually make an aesthetically pleasing vehicle again. The Thunderbird can almost single-handedly be credited with inspiring the Retro Renaissance, whose effects would define the next ten years of American automobiles, most immediately of which came a year later when Chevrolet released the SSR–an even more retro-themed roadster–that was part convertible and part truck (though in profile only). Unfortunately, the SSR simply wasn’t practical enough, or powerful enough to gain staying power in the market, and like the Thunderbird, soon faded into discontinuity. When both cars first appeared, they were welcome respites from the previous thirty years of soporific aesthetics, and heralded the Golden Age waiting just around the corner.

2. HUMMER H2

hummer-h2-7

The original H1 followed a guaranteed formula for making a cool car: legalizing a military combat vehicle for public use. Its successor in the H2 was only bigger and uglier. Even before the upper crust, rap stars, and innumerable pimp-factories got their hands on it, the H2 was well on its way to becoming the primary target of the “Green Movement” in popular conversation. “Hummer” became synonymous with “The Wastefulness of Stupid, Rich Americans Who Hate the Environment”. And with fuel economy ratings so deplorable they were conveniently omitted from EPA testing (independent testing revealed averages between 8 and 12 mpg), the H2 became an extended middle finger to every person who considered themselves an environmentalist. Though Hummer’s days with GM may be numbered, the pinnacle of the American fetish for fuel-chugging SUVs will not soon be forgotten.

3. TOYOTA PRIUS

2007 Toyota Prius Touring Edition

It’s hard to imagine a car more responsible for transforming the public’s perception of gas-guzzling grizzlies than the world’s first mass-produced hybrid. First appearing on our shores in 2001, the remodeled NHW20 of 2004 is the familiar hump-back profile we now have singed into the back of our retinas. The Prius’ surging popularity helped launch Toyota above the already faltering domestic manufacturers, and signaled the global automotive shift from the U.S. to the Far East. As gas prices sky-rocketed and the economy slowed, the Prius became a fashion statement for celebrities and common folks alike, uniting them behind the notion that owning an ugly, boring car actually prevents carbon emissions from eating holes in the atmosphere.

4. FORD S-197 MUSTANG

05_con_2cars_m

After Chevy dropped the Camaro in 2003, the Mustang became the sole surviving pony car. And rather than sit on its duff and enjoy its victory, Ford revised its most famous nameplate and created the S-197 in 2005. Bigger, badder, and better looking than ever, the new Mustang revived interest in American cars as tuners from all over the world bought up models to gussy up in their own unique image. The Retro Renaissance was gaining momentum, and the Aftermarket could barely keep up. It wasn’t long before GM and Chrysler could not afford to ignore it, and immediately rumors began circulating that the long dead spirit of American Muscle was rising again. Just like that, the Pony Car Wars had begun. But while forums and Internet chatrooms buzzed for almost four years over spyshots and secret press releases detailing the Chevy Camaro and Dodge Challenger, the Mustang continued to sell like hotcakes. By the time its arch-rivals finally appeared, recession had pushed consumers towards miniature econ-boxes and away from neo-classical American muscle.

5. NISSAN GT-R

gtr01am11

“Godzilla” came to America July 7, 2008, and we were never the same. It dropped the “Skyline” tag in name only, but retained and exceeded the capabilities of its legendary R-34 ancestor. Here was a car that owned the title as “the fastest production car in the world around the Nurburgring”, and yet it was 3800 pounds, had four seats, and was well under $100K. The GT-R simply defied physics, and every other so called “supercar” in the world took notice. The rule book wasn’t just rewritten–it was thrown out and incinerated. And despite criticisms that the car was a soulless automaton, it was in fact the distilled essence of Japanese culture. Inspired by the ‘Gundam’ anime series and designed by the makers of the “Gran Turismo” video game, the GT-R was the car of, by, and for the PlayStation generation. Its controls were laser sharp, its reactions point-and-shoot, its grip face-pealing, its brutal acceleration nearly effortless to achieve (especially with that pesky little launch control). With every downed opponent, including Aston Martins, Corvettes, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and its intended target, the Porsche 911 Turbo, we gradually felt the wheels of progress turning beneath us. We had seen something totally unique–the next wrinkle in the evolution of performance cars.

6. AUDI R8

audi_r8_2007_road_car

Much like the GT-R, the R8 also raised our expectations of what a supercar could be–only it did it with considerably more sexy body work. On paper, it was a demi-Gallardo, but on the road, however, it was so much more. Audi’s first foray into the supercar world was a home run for giving us an exotic that didn’t compromise comfort and convenience for performance and curb appeal. It won almost every major award for “Car of the Year” or “Design of the Year” in 2007 from sources such as Top Gear, Fifth Gear, Automobile Magazine, Playboy, and the “World Car of the Year” awards in 2008. The one drawback, however, was the engine. The RS4-sourced V-8 was underwhelming in the company of Murcielagos and McLarens, so Audi quickly rolled out an improved version in 2009, with a detuned Gallardo V-10 churning out 518 brutal (but well-behaved) horses and all the mystique of any Italian beauty.

7. CHEVROLET CORVETTE ZR1

2009_corvette_zr1_blue_video

The Z06 Corvette had already wowed us in 2006 as a giant killer whooping up on cars twice its price. But ultimately it lacked the sophistication to compete outright with the best of Italy and Germany. But when GM created a $100,000 Corvette and slapped the ZR1 badge on it, we had something truly special on our hands. Forever the laughing stock of Europe, finally we Americans had a two-seater worth bragging about. Sure, it had a tacky carbon-fiber roof, and sure, the interior still smelled like glue on a hot summer’s day, and the seats were less supportive than your dad’s favorite pair of briefs, but it whooped ass! It dethroned the GT-R and took the Nurburgring record for itself (not because GM really cared all that much about it, but simply because Nissan did), and even managed to earn the adoration of the impossible-to-please Jeremy Clarkson. Low, lean, and shamelessly self-aggrandizing with a Plexiglas window displaying its supercharger-cover, the ZR1 may be the best American car we see for quite some time.

8. PONTIAC AZTEK

01aztek1

GM saw its highs and lows. The Aztek was the lowest of those lows. Certainly not the worst car ever made (there are a host of others we could argue for that title) it garnered the title as the “World’s Ugliest Car” from a British newspaper, a title substantiated innumerable times by anyone who ever saw it. Its atrocious styling could partly be to blame on the way it was conceived, being one of the first cars designed entirely using computerized rapid-prototyping/rapid-visualization tools. Surely, if the designers had actually seen the car in person before boxing it up and shipping it out, they could have saved themselves untold amounts of embarrassment. Produced between 2001, brand new models were still being sold off the lots years after it was discontinued in 2005. Affectionately called the Vagina-Mobile by in-house officials (it’s not too nice looking on the outside, but once you get inside, it’s not so bad) the Aztek was an ill portent that maybe all was not well at GM, and foreshadowed Pontiac’s downfall. Oh, if only the G8 had come sooner.

9. BUGATTI VEYRON

bugatti-veyron2

With 16 cylinders arranged in a ‘W’, 4 turbochargers, 10 radiators, a top speed of 253mph, acceleration to 60 in 2.5 seconds, and a price tag of 1.5 million dollars, the Veyron was cool the same way Versailles was cool–through utterly comical levels of excess. It was the most expensive mass produced car, the fastest accelerating car, and the fastest car outright in the world’s history. It consumed fuel faster than a fraternity wannabe gulps vodka at a hazing ceremony. It could drain an entire tank in 12 minutes at top speed, just three minutes short of the tires giving way. But in between all the numbers was the absolute serenity with which it achieved its monumental feats. Soon after it appeared in 2005, there were challengers looking to steal its Top Speed crown, and while the Shelby Supercars Ultimate Aero Twin Turbo would eventually dethrone its title, the Veyron remains the uncontested exotic of choice for billionaires with small penises.

10. HYUNDAI GENESIS

2010-hyundai-genesis-coupe-5

Before 2009, no one would expected a Hyundai to win the North American Car of the Year Award, much less make it on a RideLust Top Ten list. Hyundai’s vision for the Genesis sedan was to offer a car with the performance of a BMW 5-series, the interior packaging of a 7-series, and the price of a 3-series. But even though the car is certainly as attractive and alluring as any German or Japanese rival, its badge deters most people from even considering it. Hyundai realized it needed a flagship to redefine its public image. So they followed up with the Genesis Coupe, and suddenly, we had a car that made us question our loyalty to American coupes. The Genesis Coupe excelled in providing cheap performance in a tasteful package, the very thing that had made the Mustang so successful. And while we here at RideLust refuse to be swayed by this Korean Voodoo magic, if the Genesis’ highly successful reception is any sign, the age of European dominance in the luxury and performance market may also be coming to a close, and Japan may finally have a worthy competitor on its hands.
